Downfall

Hello all,

In class, our study of Nazi Germany protrayed Adolf Hitler as a monster. The movie shows the human side of Hitler and many critics did not like the film for this. Some who watched this film actually said that they felt sympathy for Hitler in his bunker during his final days. This has disgusted people because sympathy is not an emotion that one should feel for Hitler. Please post your comments, thoughts, emotions, etc. that you thought of when you watched this film. Did this have an impact on you? What did you learn? Did you have feelings of sympathy? How did you feel about Magda Goebbels? Thanks for coming and staying after school.

  2. I really enjoyed this movie, more than I had originally expected to. From what we learnt in class, I was disgusted yet always intrigued with Hitler. As such, when watching the movie I couldn't pull my eyes away from the screen. A movie from the perspective of the Germans, furthermore those of which died with Hitler, was incredible. The way that the majority of the people gave up but died with honour surprised me. They killed themselves, or even their children! Somehow after watching the movie I felt like a bad person, I still haven't decided if it was for taking things for granted that SO many people had taken from them during this time, or the fact that I almost, for a second, began to sympathize with Hitler. It has been said the actor does an amazing job of portraying Hitler, and from what I've learnt I would have to agree. I enjoyed the movie, and am fascinated on whole subject.

I found it surprising that this movie was able to elicit a sense of sympathy for Hitler. I never would have though it possible, but this movie made it so. It captured the sense of betrayal, pain, and agony that Hitler must have felt. The fact that he was betrayed, multiple times, by multiple people, that were close to him, could have been nothing less than another "stab in the back".

I was surprised at the stubourness that Hitler exhibited during the war, and the reaction that accompanies it. It would have been brave, noble, heroic behaviour if it had been exhibited by anyone else. But it wasn't, and in the end, he couldn't even practice what he preached. It was incredable (in a morbid kind of way) that while preaching a message that it was better to die on your feet than live on your knees, he still ended up killing himself, and bailing out on the people he was claiming to uphold, in the end. And yet...so many people killed themselves becuase he wasn't around anymore. They couldn't live in a world without National Socalism. Is it only me that sees this as being crazy? Take Magda Goebbles for example. She takes the lives of her six children becuase she doesn't want them living in a world in which National Socalism doesn't exist. She couldn't just say, "You might end up living in a democracy and that sort of sucks, but such is life," NO! She kills them, taking away any chance they had to decide for themselves what kind of Government they wanted. Can you say, brain washed?

Either way, the movie was awesome. It portrayed Hitler in a really unconventional way, that stirred up controversy. While some critics may not appreciate it, I did, becuase those kind of things are the ones that really make you think.

  5. This movie made me have a totally different perspective on Hitler. It made me feel sympathy towards him even through all the atrocities he committed. Because all of his closest friends and companions left him alone in the end. I felt as if, they were so attached to Hitler due to his charisma and in the end they felt they couldn't go on without him without feeling guilty. The part of this movie that stuck with me the most was, when Megda Goebelles killed her six children with syanide pills because she didnt want them to live in a world without national socialism. Overall the film was educational and gave me multiple veiws on Hitler and his evil ways.

  7. This movie was actually crazy. For Hitler to be personified in such a way that made everyone who saw it side with him, for even a second, blows my mind. Bruno Ganz did such an amazing job in this portrayal, with all of his twitching and shaking Hitler seemed vulnerable and realistic. Seeing his relationships with the rest of his inner circle was strange because even though I knew he had acquaintances I still pictured him isolated and alone in his extremism. Downfall made all the facts we learned in class become concrete and alive. During his last days Adolf had to stick it out in a dark, damp and cut off barrack that must have been horrible, but he never stopped thinking that he was right. His determination to stand by his goals is respectable but his goals are disgusting. Sitting through this movie I had to keep reminding myself his crimes against humanity and that he was more then deserving in his defeat. Very beneficial to have seem this movie and gain new perspectives.
